What to Expect
A chemical peel works by controlled exfoliation: it removes the damaged outer layers so fresher, smoother, more even-toned skin can come forward. We offer every level, from a light peel you can have over lunch to a deeper peel that reaches further. Dr. McGovern's team will help you choose.

The Consultation
Your skincare provider will look closely at your skin and recommend the right depth for you, from a gentle glycolic peel to a deeper TCA peel.
The Treatment
The visit is simple: a chemical solution is applied to the skin to cause controlled exfoliation. A light peel takes 30 minutes. A deeper peel may call for preparation and numbing beforehand.
After Treatment
With a light peel, expect mild redness for 1 to 2 days. A medium peel brings peeling for 3 to 5 days. A deep peel asks for up to 7 days of healing. What follows is fresh, glowing skin.

Plan Your Downtime
Deeper peels (phenol and TCA) cause redness and blistering of the treated areas. Ointment is the centerpiece of your aftercare.
Ointment, gentle washing, and oozing
Deeper peels cause redness and blistering. If drainage occurs, it usually lasts for 2 or 3 days only. Sleep on your back with your head and feet elevated.
Do this
- Coat the treated areas with a light covering of Aquaphor or Vaseline two or three times daily. It's a soothing astringent that reduces discomfort and helps prevent crusts.
- Wash your hands before touching your face, and again after.
- Wash the peeled areas with a mild cleanser, water, and your fingertips as desired. Pat dry, then reapply the ointment very lightly.
- Pat any drainage with gauze sponges and wash as needed.
- Drink plenty of fluids to maintain hydration.
- Get up and walk four or five times a day.
Avoid
- Do not sleep on your face at all.
- Avoid scratching or picking the treated areas — that may cause infection or scarring.
- Do not smoke.
- Do not sit with knees bent and feet on the floor.
- Avoid long automobile trips or flights.
