Fat transfer has two recovery stories running at once — the donor site where fat was harvested, and the recipient site where it was injected.
Both sites settle in
The area of fat injection will be swollen and tender, and you may have some bruising. A small donor area requires no specific treatment. If the donor site is larger, tape may have been placed over the suctioned area.
Do this
- Wear TED hose at all times except to bathe.
- Drink plenty of fluids to maintain hydration.
- Get up and walk four or five times a day.
- Always lie with your feet elevated above the level of your heart.
- Always have your legs elevated if sitting in a chair.
Avoid
- Do not smoke.
- Avoid long automobile trips or flights.
- Do not sit in a chair with knees bent and feet on the floor.
- Do not smoke or use any form of nicotine.
Can I do this yet? Day 1
Get up and walk four or five times a day.
Remove taped gauze over a larger donor site to shower after 24–48 hours; reapply gauze if needed.
If a compression garment was placed, you may remove it temporarily for comfort or laundering.
As the swelling decreases, gentle finger massage will help.
Cleared day 2A nurse removes very small sutures 5 or 6 days after surgery.
Cleared day 5Wear them at all times except to bathe, until your provider says otherwise.
