The popularity of injectables for rejuvenating the face is so great that it sometimes looks like the world might be taking it too lightly. The skill that comes from having a board-certified plastic surgeon at the head of the practice is called for even at the stage of selecting which injectable is right for you.
An advantage that comes from the millions of procedures and applications is that the amount of experience behind these products is impressive, and that can be reassuring. But with so many options available, doesn’t it make sense to get personal advice that is just as professional as you would seek for any cosmetic procedure?
Two Basic Approaches and a Host of Possibilities
The two main non-surgical ways to erase wrinkles are by relaxing the muscles beneath the skin or by adding volume to the skin itself. Different regions of the face are among the first determining factors in choosing between the two, but your own unique characteristics and goals bring in a host of other variables.
Botox is practically legendary for the relax-the-muscles approach, being among the most widely accepted injectables, particularly for erasing forehead wrinkles and frown lines. The results are noticeable within 24 to 48 hours, the application time is only about 10 minutes per injection, and the results last four to six months in most cases. But despite the vast experience behind Botox, it is not a technique to be taken lightly. Though an MD is not needed for each application, it makes sense to choose a practice guided by board-certified plastic surgeons for your consultation.
Juvéderm is a natural dermal filler made from a smooth, water-soluble substance that already is present to some extent within the skin. It smooths facial folds and wrinkles by bringing back volume. Juvéderm’s ability to put back volume that may have been lost as we age makes it useful in many cases for lip enhancement.
Not as Famous, But Often Useful
Restylane Lyft uses hydrophilic or “water-loving” substances that attract and bind many times their own weight in molecules of moisture. As an injectable filler, Perlane works in much the same way as Juvéderm – by adding volume with a filler built from a naturally occurring substance. Because of this it can produce results that, although temporary, are long-lasting.
Radiesse is effective, too, in enhancing areas not that are not readily addressed by other injectables, such as flat or hollow cheeks. Radiesse stimulates collagen growth, and the results can last as long as a year, in many cases, because it interacts with the skin’s own processes
