What to Expect
Breast reduction is a life-changing procedure for women experiencing physical discomfort from overly large breasts. Dr. McGovern creates a proportionate, comfortable size while improving shape and position.

Women with chronic back, neck, or shoulder pain, skin irritation, difficulty exercising, or self-consciousness due to disproportionately large breasts.

Dr. McGovern will discuss your symptoms, desired size, and expectations. She'll explain the technique best suited to achieve a proportionate result.
The Procedure
Performed at RenewalASC under general anesthesia over 2-3 hours. Excess tissue, fat, and skin are removed, then the breast is reshaped and lifted.
Recovery
Most patients experience immediate relief from pain. Return to desk work in 1-2 weeks. Full recovery at 4-6 weeks.

Plan Your Downtime
Rest and do not overexert the first two weeks after surgery. It's more important for you to sleep than to rigidly follow any position suggestion.
Rest, elevate, and manage oozing
Steri-strips and a surgical bra were applied around the breasts at surgery. Small amounts of oozing and bleeding are common. Sleep on your back instead of your side, with two pillows elevating and supporting both your head and back to keep swelling down.
Do this
- Wear compression hose at all times except to shower.
- If oozing is more than slow staining of the gauze, apply firm pressure for 20–30 minutes.
- If staining through occurs, reinforce with gauze or absorbent pads.
- Leave the suture strips / brown tape / white tape over the incisions in place and wet them twice daily.
- Drink plenty of fluids to maintain hydration.
- Get up and walk four or five times a day.
- Always lie with your feet elevated above the level of your heart.
- Always have your legs elevated if sitting in a chair.
- DO NOT SMOKE.
Avoid
- Do not overexert yourself.
- Do not sit in a chair with knees bent and feet flat on the floor.
- Do not smoke or use any form of nicotine.
- Avoid long automobile trips or flights.
Can I do this yet? Day 1
Get up and walk 4 to 5 times a day.
You may shower after 24 hours.
You may remove the compression hose after 48 hours if you are walking frequently.
Cleared day 2Rest and do not overexert the first two weeks after surgery.
Cleared week 2You will wear the surgical bra for 2–3 weeks after surgery. You may remove it for laundering.
Cleared week 2Sleep on your back. It is more important for you to sleep than to rigidly adhere to this.
